Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Drug Rehab Facilities in Missouri, United States

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a component of care or opioid or alcohol use disorder. It’s an approved part of many patients’ opioid treatment programs (OTPs) and involves the use and integration of certain FDA-approved medications to treat cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Medication-assisted treatment has been dubbed the “gold standard” addiction treatment and has proven incredibly effective when integrated into an overall comprehensive treatment approach. In one commonly cited study reported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), MAT was reported to aid in a nearly 40 percent decrease of opioid overdose deaths among participants. More and more treatment centers are offering MAT as part of their overall treatment approach.

What Medications Are Used in MAT?

The approved currently used in medication-assisted treatment include:

Suboxone® (Buprenorphine and Naloxone) - Available in pill or sublingual (under-the-tongue) film form at intervals and doses specific to your care needs according to your doctor’s recommendations. The buprenoprhine works by offering a limited supply of opioids to curtail cravings and withdrawal symptoms, while the naloxone blocks the euphoric effects that can lead to dependency. Buprenorphine and naloxone are also prescribed under the names Zubsolv® and Bunavail®.

Sublocade® - (Extended-Release Buprenorphine) - Sublocade is available by injection and offers limited extended-release doses of buprenorphine to reduce opioid cravings. A single injection will last at least a month (28 to 30 days). The package insert also states the following: A minimum of 26 days must elapse between Sublocade doses

Vivitrol® (Monthly Injectable Naltrexone) - Vivitrol is a monthly injection of the medication naltrexone. It’s approved to treat alcohol and opioid dependency. Vivitrol works by blocking endorphins from attaching to brain cells that produce euphoric feelings associated with substance use.

Methadone is also used in MAT, but requires a doctor’s supervision, whereas the above drugs can be taken independently.
