MAT is widely regarded as the “gold standard” in addiction care, with research showing it can significantly lower overdose deaths. Approved medications include Suboxone® (buprenorphine/naloxone), Sublocade® (extended-release buprenorphine), Vivitrol® (injectable naltrexone), and Methadone, which is increasingly available outside of tightly controlled clinics. These medications work by easing cravings, blocking euphoric effects, or stabilizing brain chemistry. MAT is most effective as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that also includes therapies such as CBT, EMDR, or ACT to address underlying causes of substance use.
