Options Recovery Services was founded in 1996 by a dedicated team. What began as a small diversion program for the Berkeley courts quickly grew as judges and justice partners saw meaningful change among drug-involved offenders who chose treatment over incarceration. As demand increased, Options strengthened its partnerships with courts, district attorneys, law enforcement, jails, prisons, and probation departments to offer a more constructive path, one that addressed the underlying issues driving crime, homelessness, and family instability.

Despite limited early funding, Options evolved into a nationally respected model of community-based treatment, now serving more than a thousand clients each year. Its approach remains grounded in person-centered, holistic care, integrating evidence-based practices with strong community collaboration.

Through long-standing relationships with local providers, social-service agencies, and institutional partners, Options has helped redefine how California responds to substance use disorders in the justice system, prioritizing treatment, dignity, and long-term recovery over punishment.
