The VA offers evidence-based treatments for Veterans with substance use disorders, providing effective options proven to support recovery. Treatment is available at VA medical centers, clinics, and Vet Centers nationwide, where Veterans receive individualized care through therapies, medications, or a combination of both. Evidence-based therapies include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and contingency management (CM), all designed to help Veterans change unhealthy behaviors, manage cravings, and achieve personal goals.
For those needing medication support, the VA provides options specific to different types of substance use disorders, such as medications for opioid, alcohol, and tobacco use. Veterans are also encouraged to keep naloxone on hand if opioids are involved to prevent overdose fatalities. Veterans can schedule a mental health appointment through their VA health care provider or apply for VA health care benefits to begin their treatment journey.
