Connecticut is one of the many states that has laid bare the scope and severity of the opioid epidemic in recent years. A problem once thought to exist primarily among lower-income minority communities, the drug addiction landscape in Connecticut (a largely white collection of affluent suburban communities) showed that substance use was a national issue; not a regional or cultural one. In 2020, there were 1,359 accidental intoxication deaths in the state (Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, 2021). There was a 13.3 percent increase in drug overdose deaths by December 2020, compared to 2019. The average percentage of fentanyl-involved deaths was 85 percent.
In an effort to address the tragic, alarming, escalating substance use and addiction crisis within its borders, the state of Connecticut has dramatically increased its rehab and treatment resources over the past 10 years. The state’s vision and core values when it comes to helping those battling addiction include “a recovery system of high-quality behavioral health care that will offer Connecticut residents choices from among an array of accessible services and supports that will be effective in addressing their health concerns. “ This means they strive for inclusiveness, cultural awareness, and providing resources for the underserved.
