The Mental Health Crisis: A Personal Connection
The United States is currently facing a profound mental health crisis, exacerbated by a growing shortage of professionals equipped to provide timely and accessible care. This shortage has deeply personal implications for me. Through my experiences with friends and family members struggling with mental health challenges, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of inadequate treatment options. Addiction, suicide, overdose, and countless failed attempts at rehabilitation and recovery have shaped my understanding of the urgent need for compassionate, innovative, and accessible mental health care.
A New Chapter: Returning to School at 50
These experiences have inspired my decision to return to school at the age of 50 to pursue a master’s degree in Clinical Counseling. My vision is twofold: to work directly with individuals grappling with addiction and other disordered behaviors using a compassionate, modern approach and to advocate for the integration of somatic practices into mainstream mental health and medical care.
Bridging the Gap: Integrating Somatic Practices
On an individual level, I aim to combine somatic practices—such as breathwork, meditation, and movement—with evidence-based therapeutic modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). These tools help individuals move beyond intellectualizing their pain, enabling them to reconnect with their bodies and address the core narratives and wounds that perpetuate unhealthy patterns. My certifications in somatic practices have already shown me how transformative these gentle yet powerful techniques can be in empowering and healing individuals.
My Journey Toward Holistic Care
My journey toward this work began in my early twenties when I faced an acute mental and physical health crisis. Despite seeking care from numerous MDs and psychiatrists, it was a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) who finally made me feel safe, seen, and heard. This experience demonstrated the power of empathetic and holistic care—an approach I now strive to emulate. My undergraduate studies in sociocultural anthropology at Columbia University and my 20-year career as a journalist further deepened my curiosity about the human experience, which continues to inform my aspirations as a counselor.
Expanding the Impact: Education and Systemic Change
Beyond private practice, I envision making somatic practices more widely available to mental and physical health care professionals through continuing education programs. By incorporating techniques like breathwork and meditation into their practices, health care providers can enhance patient care in operating rooms, recovery spaces, and treatment centers. These practices hold immense potential in pain management and prevention, reducing reliance on medications like opioids and decreasing the risk of addiction.
A Vision for the Future
The integration of somatic practices into institutional settings offers a promising opportunity for systemic change. Imagine a healthcare landscape where mental health professionals, surgeons, and nurses alike are equipped with tools to alleviate not only physical pain but also emotional and psychological distress. This holistic approach could create a ripple effect, fostering resilience and well-being on both individual and community levels.
A Calling, Not Just a Career
For me, pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Counseling is more than a career move—it is a calling. I am driven by the belief that every person deserves access to compassionate, effective mental health care. By combining evidence-based therapeutic modalities with innovative somatic practices, I hope to bridge gaps in the current mental health system and contribute to a more inclusive, supportive, and effective model of care.
