Kentucky Addiction Statistics
Kentucky has made notable progress in reducing drug overdose deaths over recent years. In 2023, the state reported 1,984 overdose fatalities, marking a 9.8% decrease from 2022. This decline continued into 2024, with 1,410 overdose deaths—a 30.2% reduction from the previous year.
Despite these improvements, fentanyl and methamphetamine remain significant contributors to overdose deaths. In 2023, fentanyl was involved in 79.1% of overdose fatalities, while methamphetamine was present in 55.2%.
The age group most affected in 2023 was 35 to 44-year-olds, accounting for 571 deaths. However, this represented a 13.4% decrease from 2022. Notably, overdose deaths among Black Kentuckians increased by 5% in 2023, highlighting ongoing racial disparities in the impact of the opioid crisis.
To combat the epidemic, Kentucky has implemented various initiatives, including distributing 160,000 doses of Narcan, operating 84 syringe exchange programs, and providing treatment services to over 18,000 individuals in 2023.
