Maine Addiction Statistics

Maine has made significant strides in addressing substance use and overdose fatalities. In 2023, the state experienced a 16% decrease in fatal drug overdoses, dropping from 706 deaths in 2022 to 592 in 2023. This decline was among the largest in the nation, with only Kansas, Nebraska, and Indiana reporting similar reductions.

Despite this progress, Maine continues to face challenges. The state’s overdose death rate remains the highest in the Northeast, at 41 deaths per 100,000 people. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, was involved in 77% of confirmed drug deaths in early 2023.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 20.44% of Mainers aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder in the past year. Alcohol use disorder affected 11.52%, while drug use disorder impacted 12.38% of this population.

Efforts to combat the crisis include the Maine Drug Data Hub, a collaborative initiative providing comprehensive data on substance use and overdose trends. The hub offers nearly 300 data metrics, reports, and resources to inform prevention and intervention strategies.
