Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in United States is an evidence-based approach for treating Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). It combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to manage cravings, reduce withdrawal symptoms, and prevent relapse. MAT is widely regarded as the “gold standard” in addiction care, with research showing it can significantly lower overdose deaths. Approved medications include Suboxone® (buprenorphine/naloxone), Sublocade® (extended-release buprenorphine), Vivitrol® (injectable naltrexone), and Methadone, which is increasingly available outside of tightly controlled clinics. These medications work by easing cravings, blocking euphoric effects, or stabilizing brain chemistry. MAT is most effective as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that also includes therapies such as CBT, EMDR, or ACT to address underlying causes of substance use. Many treatment centers now offer MAT as part of a whole-patient recovery model, giving individuals a greater chance at sustained sobriety and long-term wellness.
