Indiana Addiction Statistics
Substance use remains a significant public health concern in Indiana. According to the Indiana Department of Health, the state reported 2,190 drug overdose deaths in 2023, marking a notable decrease from previous years. This reduction is attributed to expanded access to overdose reversal drugs, drug testing strips, and improved treatment and outreach programs.
Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicates that approximately 17.4% of Indiana residents aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder in the past year. Marijuana use in the past year was reported by 23.5% of individuals aged 12 and older.
Youth substance use is also a concern. The 2023 Indiana Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicated that a significant percentage of high school students reported alcohol and marijuana use, underscoring the need for early intervention and prevention programs.
