Overview
Priority Health offers a variety of insurance coverage options for addiction, substance use disorder, and other mental health challenges for Michigan residents through multiple plan types. The organization offers plans for Medicaid and Medicare recipients as well as private and employer-based plans for individuals and families. Their provider directory includes a comprehensive array of addiction care professionals and treatment centers that can meet your or your loved ones’ unique clinical and lifestyle needs. They also offer close partnerships with community mental health organizations to make and support more affordable and accessible to those with more limited resources and who are in crises.
Child and Adolescent Substance Use Treatment and Support
In addition to providing coverage for adults, Priority Health offers specific support options for children and teenagers who are struggling with substance use. While services and treatment options for young people are limited, help is available. Members with children who are vulnerable to addiction can contact Priority Health’s Behavioral Health Department at 800.673.8043 to speak with a clinical staff member about treatment options. Even if they can’t offer the totality of coverage, they may be able to offer critical pillars of care when needed most.
What Kinds of Substance Use Services Does Priority Health Cover?
Although your coverage may vary depending on the type of care you receive, your specific plan type, and other factors, some of the more common types of treatment available for coverage under Priority Health insurance plans include:
Outpatient Treatment
Outpatient therapy allows you to receive treatment while remaining at home or in the community. Sessions can occur weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly and focus on an array of concerns, including coping with symptoms of a substance use disorder, understanding the disorder, relapse prevention, building self-esteem, gaining insight into relationships, dealing with strong emotions, or coping with traumatic or life-altering events.
Clinicians in Priority Health’s provider directory routinely offer in-person and virtual outpatient services, including:
- Licensed Professional Counselors
- Psychiatrists
- Clinical Social Workers
- Psychologists
- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists
The exact scope and duration of outpatient care will depend on your ongoing clinical needs and other factors, but programs often last four to six weeks with daily treatment sessions consisting of four to eight hours per day. Priority Health encourages members to regularly check in with their current and prospective providers about how the process is going and what the next steps may be. They also offer coverage for intensive outpatient treatment programs, which follow a similar structure to regular outpatient, with treatment being more intense and frequent.
Inpatient and Residential Treatment
Residential and inpatient treatment allows patients to get the help they need while living at their treatment center in a safe, private, comfortable, and nurturing environment. These programs generally last for 28-30 days, during which patients can get round-the-clock care and support from trained doctors and nurses, as well as a full staff of support professionals. Programming often includes individual and group therapy, psychiatric medication management, and medically supervised detoxification and withdrawal management.
Detox and Withdrawal Management
Usually administered in a hospital-like or inpatient setting, medical detox allows patients to safely and, as comfortably as possible, get help for their acute withdrawal symptoms as they cease their drug or alcohol use. The process offers help from trained doctors and nurses who are experienced in the withdrawal process and who can intervene in a medical emergency. Programs generally last between three and seven days, depending on progress and ongoing clinical needs. Priority Health recommends that patients receive a clinical evaluation to determine the patient’s risk of adverse health complications during detox.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Priority Health plans also cover the use of certain FDA-approved medications for the ongoing treatment of opioid use disorder. These include buprenorphine (Suboxone), naltrexone (Vivitrol), and methadone.
Priority Health stresses that these medications must be administered in accordance with legal guidelines, and that medical providers who can provide them are restricted to:
- Medical Doctors (MDs)
- Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs)
- Psychiatrists
- Physician Assistants (PAs)
- Nurse Practitioners (NPs)
Priority Health also offers coverage for partial-hospitalization programs (PHPs) as the most intensive service that is offered on an outpatient basis. Treatment includes individual therapy, group therapy, and access to a clinician who can manage psychiatric medications if needed.
How Do I Find Out What My Priority Health Plan Covers?
Priority Health stresses that the easiest and fastest way to determine their scope of coverage is to contact their Behavioral Health Department at 800 673-8043. A representative will be able to help quickly identify which options are clinically appropriate and accessible for your case history. You can also speak to an admissions representative at the facility you’re considering to find out if they take your Priority Health insurance plan. They will be able to conduct a full insurance verification and let you know what, if any, portion of your treatment will need to be paid for out of pocket.
