Overview

Tufts Health Plan (THP) provides a comprehensive array of coverage options for adults and adolescents struggling with substance use disorder. They offer a comprehensive approach to substance use disorder that covers outpatient services and immersive inpatient treatments to help members in every phase of their journeys.

Through their partner organizations and affiliates, Tufts Health Plan offers coverage for a range of services to make the rehabilitation process more affordable and accessible. If you or a close family member is covered by a Tufts Health Plan policy, you may be able to use all or part of your coverage to pay for treatment and start your recovery.

What Types of Treatment Services Does Tuft Health Plan Insurance Cover?

While each person’s individual coverage options will depend on their exact plan type and provider resources, Tufts Health Plan policies generally cover:

  • Inpatient Detoxification and Withdrawal Management – Safe, controlled environments to guide withdrawal through the acute stages of the process. Inpatient detox is administered and managed by trained doctors and nurses who know what to expect during withdrawal and can intervene in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Acute Residential Treatment – Therapeutic spaces fostering in-depth care and recovery. Residential treatment involves patients staying at their facility for an average of 28-30 days so they can heal in a safe, comfortable, supportive, and distraction-free environment.
  • Medication for Substance Use Disorders – Using the latest evidence-based pharmaceutical treatments. Medication-assisted therapy (MAT) involves the use of select FDA-approved drugs to help curtail cravings and withdrawal symptoms. These medications currently include buprenorphine, methadone, and injectable naltrexone; however, each person’s coverage options for different medications will vary. Talk to your Tufts Health Plan representative to find out more.
  • Outpatient Counseling – Guided therapy for sustained recovery. Outpatient rehab allows patients to attend daily treatment sessions and then return home to stay present in their everyday lives so they can maintain their careers and family relationships. Length and duration of outpatient programs vary, but are usually 3-5 days per week for 5-8 hours per day.
  • Peer Recovery Support: Access to dedicated Peer Recovery centers, where members can connect with individuals who’ve walked this path and benefit from their experience. Peer recovery support is a cornerstone of community building, which is key to relapse prevention.
  • Community-Centric Approach – Focus on treatments deeply rooted in community ties to drive optimal recovery outcomes.

These services are covered by Tufts Health Plan partner, Spectrum Health Systems.

How Do I Determine What My Plan Covers?

The quickest way to determine the scope of coverage offered by your Tufts Health Plan policy is to either review your plan with a THP representative or contact the facility you’re considering and ask them if they accept your THP insurance. They will be able to conduct a complete insurance verification and let you know what portion of your plan is covered and what you will need to pay out of pocket.
