Overview

Zelis Health Insurance is striving for a new and more convenient way for patients to access healthcare, including behavioral health treatment services for alcohol and drug use disorders. The organization leverages a deep understanding of network data to help patients more immediately access the care they need in a process that, traditionally, can be objectively time-consuming.

Through the financial and administrative solutions that Zelis offers, providers and members alike can take advantage of a more unique and curated experience, augmenting care options, expediting the treatment journey, by providing a clear and concise breakdown of patients’ care options.

A Full Suite of Insurance and Treatment Access Modernization Services

In addition to a nationwide network of treatment providers, Zelis offers solutions to modernize the healthcare journey for members in immediate need, including but not limited to member engagement, out-of-network coverage guidance, price transparency, and payment and communication services. They transcend the role of traditional treatment companies,  integrating healthcare cost management and payments to pull waste from the system.

Many of the world’s largest insurers use Zelis for payments and claim reviews, including Cigna, Humana, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and many more national and regional providers.

What Kind of Treatment Services Does Zelis Help Cover?

While the exact scope of coverage will vary, depending on your direct insurance provider, plan type, state of residence, and many other factors, Zelis insurance helps facilitate access to a variety of common treatment services, including but not limited to:

  • Inpatient Treatment: Zelis helps members seamlessly access inpatient and residential rehab if deemed medically necessary. These programs involve patients living at their treatment facility for an average of 28-30 days and receiving care for alcohol or drug addiction in a safe, private, and comfortable setting where they can heal from distraction. While each inpatient facility offers slightly different programming, based on their resources, the model often includes medical detox on-site, as well as group therapy, individualized counseling, medication-assisted therapy, and more.
  • Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Treatment: Outpatient and intensive outpatient programs allow patients to attend daily treatment programs and return home after care. They provide flexibility, accountability, and independence while still getting the care they need. These programs vary in length but often last for four to six hours per day, with five days a week on site for treatment. They offer a less intense version of care than partial-hospitalization programs (PHPs).
  • Medically Supervised Detoxification and Withdrawal Management: Medical detox and withdrawal management are overseen by trained doctors and nurses to help ease withdrawal symptoms and help patients battle cravings. Medical detox can be offered as a standalone service or as part of inpatient treatment, and generally lasts from around three to seven days, depending on patients’ progress and ongoing care needs.
  • Virtual Counseling and Therapy: Virtual remote treatment services offer comfortable and convenient care from the privacy and safety of your own living space. Therapy is administered by expert mental health professionals who specialize in a range of conditions and co-occurring disorders to meet your or your loved one’s specific care needs.
  • Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT): MAT incorporates the use of certain FDA-approved medications, such as Suboxone, Vivitrol, Sublocade, and methadone, to help combat opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms. These services are overseen by experienced and qualified doctors and nurses and administered as part of a larger overall treatment program.

Ongoing Therapy and Counseling

To preserve continuity of care and provide patients with seamless support following their treatment program, Zelis may continue to cover common therapy techniques, including but not limited to:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT is a type of talk therapy where you work one-on-one with an experienced and qualified mental health professional to address a specific issue or set of issues that have led to a serious disruption in your mental health or quality of life. It is often used for co-occurring disorders such as SUD and depression or SUD and anxiety. There are many different types of CBT, so it’s important to check and see what services the facility you’re considering provides.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – DBT is an evidence-based therapy that’s rooted in the greater cognitive-behavioral paradigm. It’s specifically adapted for individuals who require assistance with emotional regulation. Its root word, “dialectical”, means opposing ideas or forces, which is indicative of the actual technique.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an increasingly common therapy used in addiction treatment to help individuals safely and responsibly combat traumatic experiences that lead to substance abuse and eventual addiction.

Coverage may also extend to techniques such as family of origin therapy, rational emotive behavioral therapy, and many more.
