Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy commonly used in addiction treatment to help patients process trauma. When integrated with medical detox, group therapy, and individual counseling, EMDR can significantly reduce PTSD symptoms and improve recovery outcomes. Administered in inpatient or outpatient settings, EMDR follows an eight-phase process—history taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation—that allows patients to safely reframe traumatic memories. Many evidence-based rehabs now offer EMDR, and treatment is often covered by private insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid.
